Parking (South Wing)

Bedford Hospital South Wing is situated near the town centre in Bedford, there are three main entrances to the hospital site, all of which have car parks:

1. Via Ampthill Road (A&E and Outpatients department)

2. Via Britannia Road

3. Via Kempston Road

Britannia Road Car Park
The Britannia road car park which is accessed via Kings Place operates on a ‘pay and display’ system which requires visitors to park their car, then pre-pay for their parking at the machines located in the car park, you will be given a ticket which you should display in your car.
Kempston Road Car Park

Kempston Road Car Park
The Kempston Road car park operates on a ‘pay on foot’ system, on entrance to the car park, visitors will be given a ticket, the barrier will lift and you will be able to park. If you are unable to find a space within 10 minutes, you will be able to exit the car park without incurring a charge.

Once 10 minutes has elapsed, charges will apply. Once you have parked your car you will need to retain the ticket you were given and when you are ready to leave, you will need to insert the ticket into one of the pay machines which are located in the lobby of the main reception area at Kempston Road. Once you have paid the parking charge you will need to drive to the barrier and insert your ticket to exit the car park.

Accident and Emergency Car Park
The A&E car park is accessible via Ampthill Road, however, please be aware that parking spaces in this car park are limited. This is a pay and display car park (please see information under Britannia Road car park for charges).

Disabled Parking
Disabled parking bays can be found close to most of the main entrances and parking for disabled blue badge holders is free.

Park & Ride
A Park & Ride bus service operates from the Elstow Park & Ride site, with a direct service to and from the hospital between 7am to 7pm, running every 15 minutes, or every 10 minutes at peak times. A return journey costs £1.50. Details of Elston Park and Ride

Parking (North Wing)

The car parking tarrif at North Wing is:

£1 for 30 minutes

£3.50 for up to three hours

£6 for three to seven hours

£9 for 24 hours

There are also three free ‘thirty minute’ parking spaces available for patients attending for blood tests, these spaces are situated near the exit.

Bus

There are numerous bus services around Bedfordshire that stop at Bedford Hospital. Buses and coaches also stop in Bedford town centre and Bedford Bus Station, which is about a twenty minute walk or short taxi ride to the hospital. Details of bus routes and timetables.

Train

Bedford Midland mainline station is situated about half mile from the hospital and is only a 10-15 minute walk away or short taxi ride.

Bedford St. John’s Station is about a quarter of a mile from the hospital (about 5 minutes walk). Please note that this station may not be suitable for some people as it is unmanned, involves climbing steps to the main road and there is no taxi service from the station.

Facilities

The Shop
The shop is located by the main reception desk at Kempston Road entrance and offers a range of gifts, cards, message balloons, newspapers, magazines, soft toys, groceries and toiletries. The shop is open from 7am to 8pm Monday to Friday. On weekends, the shop is open from 2pm to 6pm, with confectionary, drinks and weekend papers available to buy in the Swannery restaurant from 9am.

Cash Machine
There is a LINK cash machine located at the Kempston Road entrance of Bedford Hospital. This machine will not charge you for making withdrawals.

Food

The Swannery
The Swannery is the main restaurant on site and is located along the main corridor, near the Kempston Road entrance to the hospital. The Swannery is open from 7am-8pm Monday-Friday, and from 9am-5pm on the weekend. The Swannery offers a range of hot meals, hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, and snacks. Children’s portions and highchairs are also available.

Le Bistro
Le Bistro is the hospital café which is situated along the main corridor, opposite The Swannery. Le Bistro offers a relaxed and friendly atmosphere to enjoy a hot or cold drink, continental pastries, filled baguettes, soups or the ‘hot dish of the day’ Le Bistro is open from 8.45am to 4pm.

Vending Machines
There are vending machines offering snacks, sandwiches and hot and cold drinks located outside the outpatients department, and outside the lifts to the main ward block. There also some coffee machines available in outpatients clinics.
